Frequently Asked Questions

What is Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM)?
EDDM is a program established by the United States Postal Service designed to reach every door on a specified carrier route.
Should I consider using EDDM?

EDDM is a great choice for your business if:

  • Your product or service has wide appeal to a non-specific audience
  • Your business depends on traffic from local customers
  • Your customers can be reached within a certain geographic distance from your location
  • Your business is service oriented – restaurant, cleaner, lawn care, etc.
  • You are a real estate agent looking to advertise in specific communities

EDDM is not the right choice if:

  • You only want to target other businesses
  • You want each piece of mail to be personalized with the recipient’s name or other information
  • You want to mail to a list you already have
  • You want to target only particular demographics, such as interests, income, buying habits, etc.
What are the benefits of EDDM?
1) Reduced postage rate of 17.7¢ per piece regardless of size
2) Capability to deliver bulk mail without a mailing permit
3) Simple way to target neighborhoods, reaching every door within a specified area
4) Eliminates the need for mailing lists
Are there any restrictions?
Yes. There are certain size & weight requirements, as defined by the United States Postal Service. USPS refers to these mailpieces as “flats.” A flat needs to be more than 6 1/8″ tall or more than 11 1/2″ long, but needs to be less than 12″ high and less than 15″ long. Each individual piece can weigh up to 3.3 oz, but cannot exceed that amount. The minimum thickness of each piece needs to be at least 0.007 inches.

What types of products can be sent through direct mail?
Many different products are offered through our Direct Mail services. We offer brochures, postcards, snap packs, Versimailers™, and letters. Visit our Products page for detailed information on each product.
How do I choose a mailing route?
USPS allows you to map out an EDDM distribution by selecting carrier routes, which can be filtered by zip code, city, or address. We can also help choose the route that’s right for you, based on your defined audience.

Use our EDDM Mapping Tool to get started.

What is a carrier route?
A carrier route is a designated segment of addresses used by the United States Postal Service to distribute mail.
If I have my own list, how should it be formatted?
Note: A mailing list is not required for Every Door Direct Mail! For targeted Direct Mail:

Your list should be consistent throughout its entirety. For example, if you choose to have a name column with the first and last name included, be sure to apply this format for every contact. Make sure that each row in each column is filled in, as we cannot mail to an incomplete address. If the address has an apartment or suite number, please include it in the same line as the address.
